La Crisalida Retreats, UK, is located in the Upper Severn Valley, a beautiful part of mid-Wales, close to the source of the River Severn. Surrounded by fields and mountains, we are a short distance from the nearby village of Caersws (pronounced “care-soos”).
All in all, this is a beautiful location in which to relax, detox and rejuvenate.
Surrounding the retreat is open fields, with views down the valley and up to the nearby hills and mountains.
Caersws is the nearest village, found on the banks of the River Severn, located in the Welsh county of Powys, half way between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth. There is known to have been a Roman settlement there, around the time of 54AD and it is believed that this village was at the end of a Roman road from Chester. There have been two forts found, and the site of the second fort is next to the current train station (in fact the train station stands within the fort ramparts). Excavations of the area reveal a large settlement beneath the current village, including bathhouse and headquarters building for the garrison stationed at the fort.
The long distance Severn Way path passes close to the village.
Getting here
As you arrive at the retreat you will drive down our tree-lined driveway. These trees have a tree preservation order on them. Lined with a procession of daffodils and bluebells, it is a wonderful way to enter your peace and relaxation.
Driving
The retreat is located off the A489. Add the postcode into your satnav or driving app: SY17 5SF. You will see the sign for the retreat – do not turn into the really small road as this leads to a farm!
The largest town to the retreat is Newtown. If you are driving from Newtown, the retreat is located to the right, off the main road. Please take note of driving speeds along the roads.
There is a large car park available on site. We do not currently have a charging point for electric vehicles – the nearest is in Newtown (15 minute drive).
Arriving by train
The nearest train station to the retreat is Caersws. This is a small train station, which is unstaffed and operated by Transport for Wales. The train line runs between Birmingham and Aberystwyth, so Birmingham is a good hub to get to if you are travelling from anywhere in the UK. Train journey time from Birmingham is just under two hours. Direct trains also operate from Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton.
Please note, there are no taxis available from Caersws train station. To get to the retreat we can we provide you with taxi numbers, please call and book in advance. It is possible to walk to the retreat however it is across fields, so we do not recommend this.
One option is to get off at Newtown and collect a taxi, there is a taxi rank there. Please note the station does close around 10pm.
Arriving by bus
If you like to travel by coach, the nearest coach/ bus station to the retreat is Newtown. Try National Express, who operate a service from London Victoria, via Birmingham and Shrewsbury. There are other operators available.
Local buses are available, but do not usually operate on Sundays or Bank Holidays.
Airport information
Birmingham International Airport is the nearest international airport to the retreat and provides the most accessible option if you are flying into the UK to visit us. From Birmingham International Airport you can take a train (usually direct) to the nearby town (see train directions above). Transfer time by taxi from Birmingham Airport is approximately 2 hours (depending on route and traffic).
Manchester Airport is also relatively close to us and is a major international airport. If using public transport, you will need to take the train to Manchester Piccadilly and change. Transfer time by car or taxi from Manchester Airport is approximately 2 hours (depending on route and traffic).
You might choose to take a taxi from Birmingham or Manchester airports to the retreat. Please contact us for suggested taxi and transfer providers. We recommend these transfers are booked in advance.
London Airports. You can also fly into one of the London airports and travel using public transport.
Liverpool airport is also around 2 hours by car, but it is difficult to use public transport from this airport (you first need to transfer into the city centre).
